Overview of the cultural venues in Bruges (page
2 of 3) Overview in random order.
Concertgebouw.
The concert building is a
modern cultural center that was constructed for the occasion of
"Bruges 2002" (when Bruges was cultural capital of Europe). It
is the largest in its kind in the area and hosts many national
and international cultural activities (concerts, dance, chamber
music,...) . It is renowned for its excellent
acoustics. Address:
't Zand 34
Stadsschouwburg.
The theater is located in
the center of the town, near the Market square. It opened
in 1869 and has been thoroughly restored before Bruges became
cultural capital of Europe in 2002. It has a very nicely
decorated foyer and audience hall. It is used for local
and international productions.
Halve Maan.
The "Halve Maan" (Half
Moon) is an authentical and still operational brewery in the
center of Bruges. Currently they brew a beer called
"Brugse Zot" (the fool of Bruges) and "Straffe
Hendrik". Besides having a tasty
beer in the café you can also follow an excursion through the
brewery and learn more about how beer is brewed. You could
say it is a place where you can have a drink in a culturally
responsible way ;-).
Saint-Janshuismill.
This is the only of the four windmills on the ramparts in Bruges
that has always stood on this place. It was built in 1770
on commission of the bakers of Bruges. It stands on the
spot where before the Sint-Janshospitalmill stood (this one was
blown down in 1744). The mill is accessible for the public
and has been arranged as a museum.
Guido Gezelle museum.
Guido Gezelle was one of Flanders' most famous writers. He
is mainly known for his poetry. His birthhouse now hosts
this museum in his honour.
