Other sights and activities in Bergen Fish market. Fresh fish seems to arrive in Bergen on a daily basis because the town's fish market is open every day. This market consists of a part which is in open air (from May till September included) and part that is covered (Mathallen, whole year round). Here you can find all the good things that the sea can give: shrimp, crab, lobster, salmon, cod,... but also other specialities from the area such as reindeer meat in all different forms (sausages, salami, bacon,...). No need to torture your taste buds because you can also eat here. You will have to admit that day fresh fish has an exquisite taste.
Bergen
Aquarium. Bergen has its own aquarium (Akvariet)
where you cannot only get acquainted with the inhabitants of the
area but you will find also more exotic specimens. Sharks
cruise over your head while you walk through the shark tunnel
and amateurs of spiders, snakes and lizards will discover here a
nice collection of those too. During the feeding sessions
of the pinguins (amongst others) you are provided with an
interesting explanation by the carekeepers. The sealions
show their most playful side during their show. A tip for
people who are travelling with kids.
Fløybanen.
Mount Fløyen is one of the mountains that surround the town.
From the top of Mount Floyen you have a beautiful panoramic view
on the entire town. A small train (the Floybanen funicular)
takes you in minutes on the site. In 1918, the first train
drove up the mountain; more modern models have now taken up that
task. Note that this is one of the most popular touristic
attractions in Bergen, so you should take into account that it
can be quite busy here in the high season. This is a
recommendation for clear wheather. In 2017 the climb of
this mountain was the finale of the UCI world cycling
championship. Over 3.5 km a height difference of 300 m has
to be conquered (with the bicycle of course, not with the
funicular).
Statsraad Lehmkuhl.
The Statsraad Lehmkuhl is an almost 100 m long three mast barque
that has its anchorage in Bergen. The ship was built in
Germany in 1914 and was confisquated by the English after the
First World War. Norway bought the sailing ship from the
English in 1921 and used it as a training ship till 1967.
Nowadays, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl Foundation ownes the ship and
participates with it in different sailing contests (such as the Tall Ships Races).
They also organize shorter excursions and those who are
interested can join.
Fjord
excursions.
From Bergen you can make several excursions to the fjordlands
north and south of the town. To name just a few: Sognefjord, Nærøfjord, Aurlandsfjord,
Hardangerfjord, Sørfjord of Osterfjord. There are
different shipping companies operating from Bergen (Norled, Fjordtours, Rodne,...)
that offer such cruises. It's advised to check beforehand
which excursion you are interested in because each cruise has
its own attractions and sights. The tourism office can
help you out if necessary.
