Overview of the cultural venues in Kiev

Display in random order.

National Museum of the history of Ukraine.  As the name implies, this museum gives you an overview of the history of Ukraine, going from prehistoric times till present time.  The elaborate collection is divided into several rooms that each cover a key period in the country's rich history.  One of the most prominent items is a carriage that belonged to Russian empress Elisabeth, besides that there are important displays of coins, weapons, glass and archeologic artefacts.   Food for the history lovers.  [more information]

Chernobyl National MuseumHoused in a former firehouse, this museum commemorates the accident that happened on 26 April 1986 in the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in the town of Pripyat, north of Kiev.  The catastrophe was the biggest nuclear incident ever and the consequences of the release of radioactive particles were felt in most of Europe.  Many people died and many more suffered health problems as a result.  Villages and towns in the vicinity are still evacuated in what is known as the exclusion zone.  Educational but more than that a touching and confrontational museum.  [more information]

National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.  This is one of the must-see museums in Kiev, located in a specially designed park with various imposing statues to the glory of the Soviet victors.  The museum itself is housed in a specially built accomodation under the giant "Motherland" statue (Rodina Mat).  The museum itself consists of great halls, built to impress and that's what it does.  The collection is elaborate and does not shun to depict the atrocities comitted during the occupation which makes it at times confrontational.  Outside the building there is also a display of military hardware (tanks, planes,...).  [more information]

Museum of Folk Architecture and Everyday Life in UkraineThis open-air museum is located next to the he village of Pyrohovo, on the outskirts of the city.  It is considered one of the most interesting of the Ukraine.  Houses, farms, windmills and churches from the 17th till the 20th century are gathered in several villages portraying rural life in Ukraine in the past centuries.  You will find timbered houses, thatch-roofed barns, wooden churches from all parts of the country, from the Carpathian mountains in the west to the far east of the country.  [more information]

State Aviation MuseumThis museum is not so well known and maybee because of that unfairly a bit underrated, and that's unfortunate because it is one of the greatest aviation museums in the world.  The museum boasts an exceptional collection of mainly post WWII civil airplanes, helicopters and military jets.  If you ever wanted to see the world's largest helicopter, the mighty Tupolev supersonic bombers or other former Soviet planes (MIG, Antonov, MIL, Ilyushin, Yakovlev, Sukhoi), then this museum presents you with the ideal occasion to see all of them in one place.  [more information]
